Frequently Asked Questions

forest-path imageadjustHOW LONG IS THE SESSION?

The initial session is 50 minutes. During this time we can look at the reasons that have brought you and whether you are looking for psychotherapy or counselling.

It also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about myself and my work.

You may then decide that you would like to go away and think about the session. If you decide to continue, we would have a trial period of three further sessions which would give us both a better idea if this is what you are looking for and if I am the right person for you.
If not, I would be able to suggest other options.

These subsequent sessions also last for 50 minutes.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING?

Psychotherapy uses a more in-depth approach than counselling and will look at your life as a whole. It tends to be longer, perhaps looking at more long-standing issues. Counselling tends to be shorter and is generally focussed on specific topics that are affecting you at the moment. Both psychotherapy and counselling are a supportive process designed to help you feel more in charge of your life.

How often do I need to attend?

For therapy to be most effective, it is recommended that attendance be one a week.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session will last 50 minutes, as would all subsequent sessions if you decide that you would like to continue. This is an opportunity for you to express your reasons for coming to therapy and what you hope to gain from it. You will also get a sense of how I work and whether I am the right person for you.
